DRAFT
taotech
mission statement
Tending spaces where life happens so solidarity can emerge.
goals
- community owned infrastructure
- online alternatives to corporate social media
- physical spaces for communities to meet, organize, and interact
- education and skillsharing for organizers
- tech literacy
- leadership skills for all
- participate in building a federated, autonomous future
- committing our own organizational blueprints as copyleft "code" to distributed version control
- hosting federated spaces
services
Taotech is being created partially to organize several projects under one roof.
online
Taotech will be the host organization for several online resources and projects.
future stack
Co-op Cloud looks like a good system to build an online services co-op around.
fediverse
Taotech has a presence on the Fediverse! Sort of.
After some attempts at operating servers on the Fediverse as an individual for calebwill, but they are still using Mastodon. Future fediverse server hosting initiatives will need to wait until Taotech is properly established with more members.
defunct fediverse servers
- previously operated a Mastodon server on the domain freefree.ps, focused on Palestinian solidarity.
- previously operated a Mobilizon events server on the domain emerging.now
fediverse future
The idea is not simply to provide services for activists, but to build community spaces for everyone.
We need to provide alternatives to the alt-right pipeline. This means spaces that appeal to interests beyond the political, but that are part of an ecosystem tended to by decent people.
Some ideas for future Fediverse servers:
- music/podcasts/audio sharing community platform
- an instance of Pixelfed
- An instance of PeerTube
- Restore the London Commons as a Bonfire instance
organizing resources
Taotech also tends to other online spaces:
- A Git forge at https://source.taote.ch/ using Forgejo which also serves as the history link on this wiki!
future projects
- Nextcloud instances managed by Co-op Cloud, or the All-in-one Docker based installation method
- replace the basic hosting setup for the thriftworkers.ca Nextcloud
- possibly a Nextcloud instance for Taotech
- possibly a Nextcloud instance for freefree.ps, for work on the Arabic tutoring service idea
defunct resources
There was a lack of interest from others in the following projects, and they were decommissioned due to their lack of use.
- groupware hosting for anti-fascist organizers: https://www.loaf.group/ using Nextcloud
- random wikis like Ⓐ.🎉 https://anarchist.party/ using ikiwiki etc.
material
Our community in London, Ontario desperately needs more physical spaces that can be used by grassroots organizers for meetings and other activities.
We need something like EVAC again, or maybe a space like an old church?
workshops
- tech literacy
- computer basics
- web and internet skills
- Git
- community organizing skills
- consensus decision making
- radical inclusion
- leadership and transparent structures
- managing burnout and recovery
- burnout is real, we should organize like we're aware of it
incorporation
The plan is for Taotech to incorporate as a not-for-profit organization in Ontario, Turtle Island.
Incorporation will enable Taotech to rent (or purchase? lol…) physical community spaces as well as providing structure for the organization to persist. Incorporating as a not-for-profit organization in Ontario requires three people to form a board of directors.
organizational code
As we develop Taotech into an actual organization we will be documenting everything here on this wiki, which is also a repository in the distributed version control system known as Git.
We hope that this will enable others to easily replicate our work to adapt for their own purposes, with some of those adaptations making their way back upstream.
start-left culture
Not a start-up trying to raise a fortune, but a start-left trying to raise all fortunes.
honouring tao.ca and London Commons
tao communications, later OAT, has been on life support for a long time.
LondonCommons.net (later LondonCommons.ca) was a local online media grassroots organization in London, Ontario between 2005 and 2012:
What if we brought them back, or a spiritual successor? That's what Taotech aspires to be.

All wikis are supposed to have a SandBox, so this one does too. This wiki is powered by ikiwiki.
